[...] So here are the basics about the iPhone launch in the UK, as announced by Steve Jobs in London. It was a pretty utilitarian affair with a predictable demo by Jobs of the iPhone’s features, an announcement about the carrier, a chat from the O2 CEO Matthew Key (pictured next to Jobs), and some Q&A. Almost everything was predicted beforehand, except the rather clever idea behind O2’s service which will see it partner with European-wide WiFi network The Cloud to bundle in access for iPhone customers and the fact that the iPhone will switch seamlessly onto those Wifi nodes. For the ‘live blog’ check out CrunchGear here or TechCrunch UK here.
I don't think the price is an issue, people will pay for it as Apple are cleverly marketing it as a consumer product. There's a heck load of people who will pay that, and more for the iPhone. Shame it's not atuned for the UK market technically. I suspect they've underestimated the market a little.

I'd like an iPhone.

But on O2 with those tariffs?

I'm with T-Mobile and the tariffs are so much better, and you have their Web and Talk 3G service.

In the UK people have not expected to pay much, if anything for a new phone, and want a choice when it comes to the tariff, if you text more, talk more etc.

Yes, you might pay for say a Blackberry as this is a 'business' phone, but the iPhone is aimed at the consumer market, and I'm not sure they are prepared to pay £269 for a mobile phone.

Time will tell.

I am not going to bother with the iphone. They feel they can charge us so much more just because we live in the UK... screw apple, I will get a free one from Nokia or Microsoft, when their iphones knockoffs (you know they are coming) debut in February....

Nice work under difficult circumstances Mike, thanks.

Me, I'll be waiting - for a price drop or a pay rise and err.... for my current contract to finish.

Pretty lame excuses for no 3g, more likely they just couldn't afford them after buying so many edge chips to get a good price. With so many other good phones in the UK market with 3g, the iPhone looks pretty lame to me. I don't see why the customer can't make their own decisions on what feature they'd prefer to have active, the music, or the 3g access. I already have an ipod so couldn't care about the music aspect for instance, but I do care very much about high speed web access.

I'll wait for the 2nd generation. Hopefully it'll be available on more providers then, like T-Mobile.

Nice live-blogging Mike.
