Dopplr to calculate carbon
by Mike Butcher on March 10, 2008

UK startup Dopplr - which allows you to ‘optimise’ your trips to allow more useful meetings with your social or business network thus effectively reducing travel - is to soon allow members to calculate their carbon emissions as they traverse the planet. Dopplr is teaming up with AMEE for the feature, being tested alpha-testers currently. The latter is a neutral, open platform for measuring the “Carbon-Footprint” of anything. The ability to specify your mode of travel is one of the “finishing touches” they are working on before launch. An early screenshot is posted above.

I have to say I’m glad they are doing this, since it seemed like a gaping whole in the strategy for a while. By adding carbon calculation, Dopplr can further make its service more useful to users and could even hook into enterprise networks for calculating a business’s carbon impact for tax purposes.
